The nutritional value of various foods and diets for juvenile bivalves is reviewed and commented. From all foods tested specific microalgues seem to be the most suited for young bivalves. Presently, serious alternatives for replacing living algae by inert, artificial feeds are practically inexistent, though research efforts are made in this direction. The various microalgae production-systems used for feeding juvenile bivalves are also reviewed. A literature survey and the COST inquiry held in 1979 by our laboratory revealed that nearly all commercial enterprises involved in nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Europe utilize natural phytoplankton as food. Culturing of the postlarvae is performed either in situ (in the sea) or in... |

Cockle mortality events have been reported in northern France since 2012. In the present study, we describe and investigate the implication of a potential bacterial causative agent in cockle mortality. Bacteria isolated from five different cockle mortality events were characterized and studied. Using phenotypic analysis combined with DNA–DNA hybridization (DDH) and whole genome sequencing, the isolates were shown to belong to Vibrio aestuarianus , a species regularly detected in France during oyster mortality events. Comparison of the strains from cockles with strains from French oysters and the type strain showed that the strains from cockles were genetically different to those from oysters and also different to the V. aestuarianus type strain. Moreover,... |

Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric viruses. The channel of transmission of enteric viruses to human beings could be decreased particularly if the systems of depuration of shellfish were optimized, standardized and if their viral efficiency was controlled. The purpose of this work was to study the contamination of oysters and to assess the efficiency of several depuration processes. Our study have demonstrated that in some cases, 50% of oysters samples contain enteric viruses or H.A.V. antigen and the quantities of viruses range from 17 to 246 FF for the rotaviruses and from 124 to 200 for the enteroviruses per 100 g of tissue. According to our results, the exclusive use of a bacteriological criterium to determine... |
